Here, Zamri answers some questions that are often asked by his clients...
Why did you become a personal trainer?
I was never a sporty person (I can't kick a football to save my life!) and in school, I was one of the regular 'PE class dodgers'. The word nerdy certainly springs to mind! I was in the middle of doing a PhD in Chemical Engineering when I decided to get away from the stuffy academic environment and look for a fresh direction. I quit my PhD and I enrolled on a Diploma in Personal Training and it was love at first sight. I can truly say that my search for a fresh direction ended up in me finding a vocation!
What excites you the most about training a client?
Making clients realise just how their bodies are capable of moving in the way they've never imagined possible. Modern day living demands very little movement of our bodies, and even when it demands any movements, they are very one dimensional. My clients are often surprised that after a few training sessions, they are able perform complex multiplanar movement with fluidity and grace! They feel more coordinated, more flexible and more mobile than ever before.
What is the one thing that you think is misunderstood about personal training?
That it is a luxury. Personal training is a necessity not a luxury. If you want to make exercising a habit of a lifetime, it is absolutely vital that you have some personal training sessions to teach the correct basic exercise techniques and movement executions. Once you've mastered techniques and executions, you can pretty much do any exercise safely and effectively. I recommend having 2 personal training sessions a week for at least 3 months if you are a beginner.
What makes you a good trainer?
Motivation, commitment and a genuine interest in a client's well being and performance. Seeing improvements in a client and watching them recover from injury is genuinely rewarding for me as a trainer and it spurs me on to help them more. Also, my techniques are not all about lifting heavy weights or some of the more obvious methods; my technique teaches clients about their bodies, natural strength and to be more aware of their bodies. In fact, my approach makes me an excellent trainer, not just a good one!
Describe your style in 3 words.
Posture, Precision, Personal and polite (can I have four?)
What is your favourite exercise and why?
Multidirectional lunges because accumulatively, we spend a lot of time on one leg (walking, running, going up the stairs). This exercise teaches dynamic stabilization of the body while on single leg stance. Furthermore, most people are so restricted around the hip that it makes perfect sense to move the hip in many different directions.
What is the one advice you can give to a client?
The human body craves movement, so get off your backside and start moving it!
